Let’s go surfin’ now . . . Everybodys learning how!

Due to the long waiting list for surfboard lockers, construction is underway for 28 new longboard lockers on the north side of the Club.  These lockers are built to hold longer boards, over ten feet, so we would like to use the new lockers ONLY for the longer surfboards.  The cost of the longer lockers will be $100 per year.  We will be trying to contact those who currently rent a surfboard locker to see if there is a need to move to the longer lockers. The Board has approved holding 4 lockers for those renting rooms on the 3rd floor.  The cost for weekly rental will be $20.  The lockers for 3rd floor guests can be reserved on a first come – first served basis by contacting Mollene.

If you currently have a locker and would like to move to the longboard locker, please contact Mollene or Deak Walden.  Once it is determined how many and what size lockers are available, people from the waiting list will be contacted. There are currently 45 members on the waiting  list, so we will try to build more lockers in the near future.

We are also researching the possibility of adding more chair lockers on the property. More on that later!

August 2011 Newsletter

Hanover Seaside Club Newsletter – August 2011

Yikes! Believe it or not, before this month ends most of the children will be back in school. It has been a fun and busy time at the Club over the vacation season. We are, happily, only about half way through a wonderful beach season, though, so if you have been too busy to drop in and either rock on the porch, enjoy a wonderful dinner in the club dining room or get your feet wet, there is still plenty of time.

For those of you who would like to get a group together for a last “hurrah” before winter, there are open dates for the A-Frame. As of this writing, the weeks of Aug. 26th to Sept. 2nd, and Sept. 2nd to Sept. 9th, are available. Mid-season rates are available for non-affiliated renters and there is a special extra discounted fee for members or their immediate family. It is a really good deal if you have four or more in your party or want to cook and eat at your leisure rather than depending on the club dining room or snack-bar. If you are interested, contact our rental agents at Holiday Rentals at 256-2911 and ask for Chris or Judy. Be sure to let them know you are a member of the Club.

Have you made your reservation for the Summertime Valentine Dinner? Just a reminder that Saturday, July 30th the club will host a Summertime Valentine party. It begins at 6:30PM and lasts until…; costs $18.00 for Prime Rib and $14.50 for Baked Chicken. Both entrees include wine. If you haven’t attended before then you have missed a lovely dinner and ambiance. Mollene and her staff go all out to insure everyone has a wonderful, memorable evening. The dining room and the tables are all dressed out in red and white from flowers to table decorations and the staff will make you feel sooo pampered. So bring your “honey” or your “buddy” to the club and enjoy a really fun evening. If you would like to go but need a ride, let Mollene know. Reservations are required and payment for this event will be collected at the door. The meal cost does not come off the yearly meal assessment.

Calendar:

August 10th: Final Bingo 8:00PM A-$3.00 C-$2;00 first cards Extras are $.25 each

August 17th: Card Party 10:00AM – 3:00PM $10.00

August 20th: Order from the Menu 6:00PM-9:00PM Relax and enjoy table service. Payment for the meal will be collected at the door.

Remember September 1st: The last date to postmark your 2011 Dining Room minimum ($60.00) without penalty.

Reservations for all meals should be made at least 24hrs. in advance. To ensure that only the freshest food is served to you, food is purchased no more than 24 hrs. before being served and is purchased according to how many reservations have been placed. If you do have last-minute guests and would like to include them at the club for dinner, please call Mollene and make sure there is enough food prepared to accommodate extra guests. When the kitchen staff know there will be additional people for dinner they will do their very best to accommodate you. The whole purpose of the club is to give you, the membership, a worry-free fun place to enjoy and to bring your guests. Please help the staff make you and your guests as comfortable as possible by keeping Mollene or Beth in the loop about your club needs.

Just a note from me . . . When you have questions – any questions – regarding the club please address them to Mollene. I am just a member like you and do not have answers to your questions or remedies for your problems. All I can do is pass your concerns along to Mollene which slows up her response to you. I surely do not mind sending your letters along to her but I just wanted you to know it will slow up her response to you. I use this e-mail address for this letter only so it could be two or three weeks before I see your letter to pass along. The club e-mail address is at the bottom of this letter. Also, if it is something that needs immediate attention be sure to call the office at the number listed below. Thanks so very much for all of the positive feed-back on the newsletter. It’s always refreshing to know folks read it and are able to attend an event they had forgotten was coming around.

Stay cool, stay safe and stay in touch.

4th of July Celebration 2011!

Tradition is very important to the members of the Hanover Seaside Club.  What could be better than a traditional 4th of July celebration?  The day started with the flag being raised by Bo and Eddie Wessell.

Next, group photographs were taken on the front steps – first the adults, then the children.

Then it was off to the beach for the annual parade.  Trey led the way, drumming up enthusiasm, while flags waved in the ocean breeze.

There were races on the beach for the kids – both small and large!

The celebration included a Cupcake Walk, fried chicken lunch, Horseshoe Tournament and lots of rocking and catching up with old friends.

It was wonderful to see all members, both young and old, enjoy the celebration of our independence.  What a wonderful day!

Photographs submitted by Frank Bua and Elise Beall.

Hanover Seaside Club Newsletter – July 2011

Whew!  Did I sleep through spring??  What happened to the 75 degree days and 65 degree nights we are supposed to enjoy before Summer sets in?  If there is ever a time to appreciate our membership in the Hanover Seaside Club, that day has come.  While we haven’t had much rain to cool the air, the sea breeze makes the atmosphere palatable and the porch rocking chairs that much more comfortable.   Driving to the club looking at all the sweltering people, hot cars, and lack of parking spaces, makes me especially thankful for our club, the folks who run it and the members who use it.

This month there are several special parties that always get super-positive feed-back and seem to be the unofficial kick-off of the beach season.

HISTORY

The Hanover Seaside Club is a private, family oriented, multi-generational beach Club dedicated to providing facilities, and social and recreational activities for its members and their guests. The Club was chartered in 1898 by a group of members who were mostly born in Hannover, Germany, or descendants of those who were. The original site of the Hanover Seaside Club was located on a parcel of land donated by the New Hanover Transit Company in Carolina Beach. In the early years, members would board a steamship in downtown Wilmington to travel to Carolina Beach.   In 1906, following the construction of a railway from Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach. a second Clubhouse was built on Wrightsville Beach.  At the time, the intent was to allow members to use both properties; however, a storm in September 1906 did considerable damage to the Carolina Beach property. The Board decided to sell the property and have only one Clubhouse – on the site of the current Hanover Seaside Club in Wrightsville Beach.  In 1954 the Club sustained severe damage from Hurricane Hazel, the first Category 4 Hurricane, to strike the east coast.  A fire in December 1981 completely destroyed the Hanover Seaside Club. Plans to construct a new Clubhouse began immediately with the ground floor opening for use in the summer of 1982.  The current building, which looks very much like its predecessor, was completed and dedicated in March, 1983.  While the Club has grown and improved through the years, many of the current members are descendants of those first members who took a steamship from Wilmington to Carolina Beach to enjoy the cool ocean breezes and the hospitality offered by the Club.  The congenial family atmosphere is what members most love about the Hanover Seaside Club.  Members truly believe that the Hanover Seaside Club is their Club and summer home.
