HISTORY
The Hanover Seaside Club is a private, family oriented, multi-generational beach Club dedicated to providing facilities, and social and recreational activities for its members and their guests. The Club was chartered in 1898 by a group of members who were mostly born in Hannover, Germany, or descendants of those who were. The original site of the Hanover Seaside Club was located on a parcel of land donated by the New Hanover Transit Company in Carolina Beach. In the early years, members would board a steamship in downtown Wilmington to travel to Carolina Beach. In 1906, following the construction of a railway from Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach. a second Clubhouse was built on Wrightsville Beach. At the time, the intent was to allow members to use both properties; however, a storm in September 1906 did considerable damage to the Carolina Beach property. The Board decided to sell the property and have only one Clubhouse – on the site of the current Hanover Seaside Club in Wrightsville Beach. In 1954 the Club sustained severe damage from Hurricane Hazel, the first Category 4 Hurricane, to strike the east coast. A fire in December 1981 completely destroyed the Hanover Seaside Club. Plans to construct a new Clubhouse began immediately with the ground floor opening for use in the summer of 1982. The current building, which looks very much like its predecessor, was completed and dedicated in March, 1983. While the Club has grown and improved through the years, many of the current members are descendants of those first members who took a steamship from Wilmington to Carolina Beach to enjoy the cool ocean breezes and the hospitality offered by the Club. The congenial family atmosphere is what members most love about the Hanover Seaside Club. Members truly believe that the Hanover Seaside Club is their Club and summer home.
