HISTORY

The Hanover Seaside Club is a private, family oriented, multi-generational beach Club dedicated to providing facilities, and social and recreational activities for its members and their guests. The Club was chartered in 1898 by a group of members who were mostly born in Hannover, Germany, or descendants of those who were. The original site of the Hanover Seaside Club was located on a parcel of land donated by the New Hanover Transit Company in Carolina Beach. In the early years, members would board a steamship in downtown Wilmington to travel to Carolina Beach.   In 1906, following the construction of a railway from Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach. a second Clubhouse was built on Wrightsville Beach.  At the time, the intent was to allow members to use both properties; however, a storm in September 1906 did considerable damage to the Carolina Beach property. The Board decided to sell the property and have only one Clubhouse – on the site of the current Hanover Seaside Club in Wrightsville Beach.  In 1954 the Club sustained severe damage from Hurricane Hazel, the first Category 4 Hurricane, to strike the east coast.  A fire in December 1981 completely destroyed the Hanover Seaside Club. Plans to construct a new Clubhouse began immediately with the ground floor opening for use in the summer of 1982.  The current building, which looks very much like its predecessor, was completed and dedicated in March, 1983.  While the Club has grown and improved through the years, many of the current members are descendants of those first members who took a steamship from Wilmington to Carolina Beach to enjoy the cool ocean breezes and the hospitality offered by the Club.  The congenial family atmosphere is what members most love about the Hanover Seaside Club.  Members truly believe that the Hanover Seaside Club is their Club and summer home.

NEWS ~ NOVEMBER 27, 2024

FOOD SERVICES MANAGER: Garrett Wilson, our former Food Services Manager, resigned to accept a position elsewhere. Please welcome our new Food Services Manager, Jeremy Ulrich, a native of Wilmington who has worked as a sous chef for us for the past four years. Jeremy has a strong background in food preparation and planning and has been collaborating with our Club Manager on the food tastings this fall. He has a passion for the culinary profession. We are looking forward to working with Jeremy to make the dining experience at the Club exceptional.

TASTINGS: We have successfully completed two of the three tastings scheduled. The third is scheduled for December 3. If you have a reservation for that evening and will not be able to attend, please contact the office. We have a waiting list of people who would like to participate.

WEBSITE: Our Club website is especially useful for members in a variety of ways. You can read the blog, find information about rooms, meals, and parties, pay your accounts, order snack bar food during the summer, and access our roster of members. Many of the questions you may have can be answered on the website. If you have not set up your account, the office can help.

CONTACT INFORMATION: It is extremely important that we have correct contact information in our files for each member. A mailing will be going out in a few days, and e-mails are sent on a regular basis. If you have moved or changed your phone number or e-mail address, be sure to call the office and provide them with your correct information. You can also make changes by logging in to your account on hanoverseaside.club and go to the Member Central section.

STATEMENTS: Dues statements will be mailed in a few days. This is the last year that statements will be mailed. In the future, statements will be e-mailed to the address we have on file. This will save us both staff time and the cost of printing and postage. If you prefer to have your statements mailed, please contact the office, and we will ensure you continue to receive them by mail. According to our Constitution, dues must be paid by January 31 of each year. If a member does not pay dues by that date, they will be suspended and denied privileges of membership until dues are paid. Restoration of membership shall be at the discretion of the Board. Remember, you can save yourself time and a stamp by paying your dues online.

FOOSBALL TABLE: Generations of Club members have enjoyed the foosball table on the first floor. Sadly, many years of damp, salty weather have taken a toll on this table. We would like to refurbish our existing table. If you have the skills and would like to help with this project, please call the Club office. We would like to have it refurbished and ready for the 2025 season!

CHRISTMAS PARTIES: Don’t forget to make reservations for the Adult Christmas Party on December 7 and Cookies with Santa on December 14. We need an accurate count of those attending so that the staff can prepare enough food.

STAFF CHRISTMAS GIFT: Please remember to send your contribution for the staff Christmas gift no later than Friday, December 13. A previous notice incorrectly stated that the 13th was on Wednesday. Sorry for the confusion. We would really like to thank our staff for all they do for us during the year. Not only do they take care of us during the extremely busy summer months, but they also prepare meals for special occasions and private parties. Our Club always looks neat and cared for, and our kitchen and wait staff do an amazing job delivering hot and delicious snack bar food as well as meals in the dining room. The best way to say thank you is to contribute to their Christmas gift. You can drop your check in the office or mail it to our PO box. Make your check out to Hanover Seaside Club and not Staff Christmas Gift in the memo section.

HSC MUGS: Looking for the perfect gift for a Club member? Our mugs are on sale for $10 each. Stop by the office and buy a few!

NEWS ~ NOVEMBER 2, 2024

ANNA PRICE: Love and prayers go out to Lisa Peeler and Andrew Price on the death of their daugher/sister, Anna Elizabeth Price on October 25. The obituary can be found HERE.

THANKSGIVING EVENTS: Don’s forget to make reservations for our Thanksgiving buffet on Sunday, November 24 and the Flotilla Chili on the Pier on Saturday, November 30. Details are in the last newsletter.

ANNUAL MEETING: The Annual Meeting for Regular Members was held on Saturday, October 26 at the Club. Officers elected to one year terms include President – Dan Harris, Vice-President – Armistead Boyd, Secretary – Valrie Horton, and Treasurer – Laura Earnhart. Shanda Bordeaus and Gregg Surratt were elected to the Boardd of Directors.

Several changes were made to the Constitution. The job of Secretary/Treasurer was split into two positions. There is just too much work for one volunteer to handle. The initiation fee for new members was raised from $5000 to $7500. This does not affect initiation fees of sons/daughters who join prior to their 26th birthday or marriage, whichever comes first. The initiation fees for sons and daughters is on a sliding scale dependent upon how long their parents have been members. This is now listed as a dollar amount instead of a % amount to make it easier. The actual amount charged for sonsdaughters did not change. The new costitution will be uploaded to the website and can be found on the Quick Links page in the next couple of weeks.

The next Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 10:00AM in the dining room at the Club.

STANDING COMMITTEES: We still need volunteers to serve on several of our standing committees. Most committees are composed of both Regular and Seasonal Members. If you would like to join a committee, please call the Club office at 910-256-2726 and have your name put on the list. Committees that need members are: Operations, Social, Governance, Finance, Facilities, and House.

BUNCO: Monday, November 4 at 6:00pm. Come on down and enjoy an evening with friends!

CHRISTMAS DECORATING: We need all the help we can get to decorate our Club for the holiday season. Please plan to meet at the Club on Saturday, November 16 at 10:00am to hang some garland and decorate the trees!
