NEWS ~ JULY 2, 2021

4TH OF JULY!

Just a couple more sleeps until our traditional 4th of July Celebration! We are so excited that this year we can have all the activities that members have loved through the years. To see a full schedule of events, look back at the blog posted on June 12. A few reminders . . .

  1. Only blue stickers will be allowed in the parking lot until at least 4:00. No guest passes will be sold on July 4. Guests may park after 4:00. If the office is closed, have your guest put a paper with their name, as well as the member name and number on the dash.
  2. Since the 4th falls on Sunday this year, there will not be a buffet breakfast. If you would like to come early for a Continental breakfast, be sure to call for reservations by Saturday morning.
  3. The Opening Ceremony is starting a little later this year and activities are moved back to hopefully allow members to go to an early church service then come to the Club. Opening ceremonies will begin at 11:00.
  4. All members and guests must wear wristbands. If you have not picked up your member wristband, there will be a table set up on the first-floor porch on the Lumina Street side of the building. We will be giving out member and guest wristbands from that location – DO NOT GO TO THE OFFICE! We will set up at 9:00am and remain until most members have arrived. If you come later in the day and do not see the table, go to the office.
  5. If you ordered the pulled pork lunch, call the Club office at 910-256-2726 when you are ready for your plate to be delivered. Just tell them where you are, and they will bring your take-out plates to you. You may eat in the dining room, snack bar area, or on any of the first or second floor porches.
  6. If you would like to compete in the Cornhole Tournament or the Ken Johnson Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, signup sheets will be available on the first floor, ocean side porch.
  7. We expect that our facility will be quite crowded on July 4. Please remember that unvaccinated members and their guests are encouraged to wear masks inside the building.
  8. Please pick up after yourself! We are working with reduced staff, so we need members to help keep our building and grounds neat and clean.
  9. Please do not park in the gravel lot if you will be coming later and/or leaving early. We are reserving those spaces for members who will be coming early and staying all day so that the gate will not have to be opened and closed over and over during the day. As in past years, we expect that we may have to double park cars in the main lot during the most crowded part of the day. Just leave your keys in the car and the parking lot attendants will move cars as needed.

Thanks to our Social Committee, chaired by Cher Pridgen, for organizing our celebration. It truly does take a village to offer all the games and activities for July 4th! We always need volunteers to help with social activities. Contact Cher if you can volunteer for one or more events this year.

More details will follow.

EVENTS: Thanks to our Social Committee, our June events have been extremely successful!  On June 19, we had a crowd at our first Family Fun Night. A hot dog supper was served along with a cash bar and lots of fun and games for the kids. The kids absolutely LOVED the dragon obstacle course. We feel sure he will make another appearance. Thanks to our volunteers Cher and Mike Pridgen, Suzanne and Freddy Harrell, Susan Milholland, Jean and Eddie Lawler, Lisa Price, Peggy Russell, Joe Browning, Tanner Konrady, Maria Stasios, Debbie Whitman, and Jan Sheppard.

Our Full Moon(ish) Margarita Night was a huge success. We had the largest crowd I have seen at the Club (other than 4th of July) in many years. Not sure what was more popular, the cash bar or Pepe’s Taco Truck, but there were lines for both most of the night. The kids had a great time playing cornhole and running in the sand! Our volunteers included Mike and Cher Pridgen, Suzanne and Freddie Harrell, Debbie and Clark Whitman, Helen and Lee (music man) Pearson, Maria and Jim Stasios, Lois Steel, Jan Sheppard and Elise and Megan Beall.
We have had rave reviews of our events this summer. It takes a lot of helping hands to make even the simplest event successful. If you are willing to help, please contact Cher Pridgen, Social Committee Chair. We have several events coming up and we can use more volunteers.
HSC FACEBOOK GROUP: If you are on FaceBook, be sure to join the private Hanover Seaside Page. If you are not a social media user, it would be worth your time to join FB just to follow our page. It’s the fastest, easiest, and least expensive way to get the news to our members. We have voted on several things this summer – the colors for tees and cups, and plans for the snack bar. I have had several people request to join the page recently who do not show on our roster. For many of our accounts, spouses and dependent childrens’ names do not show. I cannot approve an account if they do not show on the roster, so please call the Club office to update your member information. Same is true if names change due to marriage.
MERCHANDISE:  This is what our merchandise cabinet looked like one week ago!. We are absolutely shocked at how many tees we sold in 5 days. As of now, there is one 1 toddler and 1 youth tee left. In Adult Small though XXL there are only a couple in each size – and mostly athletic gray. We have a few more XXXL. As of Saturday night, there was one green and one light blue shirt left, and perhaps a couple of navy and white fleck. Don’t despair! We are placing another order for tees today. In approximately 3 weeks, we will be able to restock all of the colors you see here and add a coral color for those who wanted something different.
We have several long-sleeved tees in navy and athletic gray. We will not reorder long sleeved until later in the summer.
We still have about 8 hats and plenty of purple and royal blue stadium cups. Stop by the office to pick up your hats and cups before they run out, too!

CLUB CLEANLINESS:  The season is young, but we are already seeing a few problems around the Club. Please remember that the chair storage racks are ONLY for those renting rooms on the 3rd floor. If you do not have a chair locker (and there is a waiting list) you are not allowed to leave your chair at the Club if you are not renting a room that day. Also, clothing (including wet suits), chairs, and beach toys should not be left on the porches, in the picnic area, or anywhere on the property. Please don’t place surfboards or other personal items on the picnic tables – leave them open for memberes to eat. Also, don’t leave wet towels draped over picnic tables and chairs to dry. There are clothes lines with clothes pins on the north side of the buiding for your use. Make sure you place all trash in the approved receptables located in and around the building. When you eat at a table in the snack bar, wipe it off when you are finished. Ants and other undersirable pests become a very large problem when food and scraps are left on tables and chairs. Thanks for helping us keep our facility neat, clean, and orderly.

WRISTBANDS:  Don’t forget to stop by the office to pick up your wristband as soon as possible. For more information on wristbands, look at the last blog on hanoverseaside.club. Wristbands will be required beginning June 25. If you are planning to come to the beach for July 4, try to get by the office in advance to get your wristbands. If you are not able to do so, we will have tables set up to pass out wristbands as quickly as possible on July 4. More information will follow.

NEW TEE DESIGNS:  We have been waiting impatiently for our new Club tees and hats. Supply chain issues have made our order take longer than normal, but the wait is nearly over. The plan is to have them in stock and ready for you on Tuesday, June 22. We will have all colors (light blue, green, white, gray, and navy) in all sizes. However, quantity in each color is limited, so get your shirt early! We will not be holding shirts for members. We do not have the staff to take telephone orders, nor the space to store them. You can get your shirts iin the Club office or in the downstairs Snack Bar during weekend hours. We think you are going to love the quality and design of our new merchandise. Shirts are a soft, triblend material. Hats are embroidered, not screen printed. The increase in quality equates to an increase in price, but we have kept prices as low as possible.

Adult short sleeve (S-XL) ~ $18

Adult short sleeve (XXL) ~ $22

Adult short sleeve (XXXL) ~ $24

Adult long sleeve (S-XL) ~ $24

Adult long sleeve (XXL) ~ $26

Adult long sleeve (XXXL) ~ $28

Youth and toddler short sleeve ~ $20 (Very small inventory)

Fully Embroidered Hats ~ $25

STADIUM CUPS HAVE RETURNED:  Back by popluar demand – 22 ounce stadium cups with lids and straws for $4! We have royal blue and purple in stock and ready to sell. You can buy them in the office, the downstairs snack bar on weekends, or add them to your Snack Bar order.

100 GOLDEN SUMMERS:  We have found a few copies of Ann Hutteman’s book about the Hanover Seaside Club entitled 100 Golden Summers. It was written to honor the first 100 year of our Club – 1898 to 1998. The book provides a history of the Club from when it was founded at Carolina Beach to 1998, along with pictures of the old facilities and members. This book contains many treasured memories. You can purchase copies for $20 at the office.

WRISTBANDS

Over the past several years, there has been a tremendous increase in trespassing/non-members accessing our Club property. It is a real problem that the Board has examined for years. To date the Board has increased security measures through a paid security guard, additional parking lot staff, additional gates, and no-trespassing signs; however, these measures have not been effective.  The Board has spoken to other clubs and discussed this with the town of Wrightsville Beach.

At the last Board meeting, the Board approved the use of reusable wristbands as a security measure.  After careful review of various options, the Board determined that it is necessary to move forward with a method to identify members. We recognize that this change will not be celebrated by all, but it truly is the best method the Board could find to meet Club needs.

Wristbands as a security method have been adopted because they are:

·        An easy, visible method to identify members.

·        Cost effective

·        Customizable

·        Reusable and easy to replace

·        Available in a disposable version for guests

·        Available in multiple sizes (we have 7 inch and 8 inch)

The Board will be monitoring usage and compliance with the wristbands over the next few weeks. We ask the membership to embrace this new security measure. An enforcement policy will be implemented as needed. Ideally, the membership will adopt the new policy and wear their wristbands as requested. You don’t have to wear wristbands on the beach – just on Club property. If you choose not to wear the band on your wrist, there are options. You can attach it to a beach bag, your key ring, your cell phone, etc. It just needs to be obvious that you have a member wristband.

The effective date of the new policy is June 25, but we recognize it will take time to adopt. All members will be required to wear a wristband. Minors (under the age of 18) are asked to wear wristbands when not accompanied by an adult member. The procedure for obtaining wristbands, are as follows:

1.     Pick up wristbands in the office during regular office hours (Monday 10-2, Tuesday-Friday 10-4, Saturday 9-6, Sunday 10-4). Wristbands will be available beginning Thursday, June 17.

2.     An adult family member (18 or older) can pick them up for the entire family.

3.     If a member did not return a Member Survey previously, they must update family information in Jonas, which can be done at the office as well.

4.     Out of town members can pick up wristbands on their first visit to the Club. The wrist bands will not be mailed.

5.     The date received and the number of wristbands supplied with be documented and members will be asked to acknowledge receipt.

6.      Disposable wristbands will be available for your guests. You can pick one up either in the office or from the parking lot attendant, if there is one on duty.

7.     If you get to the beach and realize you forgot your wristband, no problem. Just stop by the office and pick up a disposable guest wristband for the day.

The Board thanks its membership for supporting this initiative and will be reviewing its adoption on an ongoing basis. Changes or updates to the policy will come as we receive feedback from the membership. Please help make this a success so we can better protect the interest of the membership.

Please do not respond to this e-mail with questions and comments regarding wristbands. You can e-mail Board members by clicking on their names under Board of Directors HERE.

If you call and nobody answers, leave a message and someone will return your call. Occasionally, you may get a message that the mailbox is not able to take a message. Wait a few minutes and try again. We are training new staff all over the Club, so please introduce yourself and be polite and friendly while the staff learns their new jobs.

NEWS ~ MAY 26, 2021

Our 2021 Summer Season will kick off Friday evening. We are so happy to be nearly back to pre-Covid days. We will be hosting parties and events once again. Our dining room is back to full capacity. Showers and dressing rooms are open. Members can bring guests again; however, no guest passes will be given out before 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Masks are NOT required either inside or outside for fully vaccinated individuals. Those who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to wear masks indoors. We hope to see a lot of you this weekend!

NEW MANAGER:

The Board has hired a new manager, Gregg Tolerico. Gregg will be in for most of the weekend, then will assume full-time duties later next week. The Search Committee was extremely excited to find an applicant with Gregg’s experience and skills who is willing to live on-site. He has friends who are Club members, so he has visited many times in the past. Gregg understands the traditions and culture of the Hanover Seaside Club and is looking forward to getting to know our members and helping us improve our facilities and programs.

SOUNDSIDE PROPERTY:

Our soundside property stops at the bulkhead on the north side of our pier. We had a friendly agreement with Dr. Turlington, who passed away 2 years ago, that allowed us to use the soundside beach between our pier and his. The property has been sold and the new owner has children and grandchildren who want to be able to use the space. We are working on an agreement with him; however, until that time we need our members to respect the property line. There is currently a rope line delineating the area we are allowed to use on the north side of our pier. The water up to the high tide line is included as a CAMA Public Trust Area, so you may swim anywhere in the sound. But you may NOT put beach chairs and allow children to play in the sand above the high tide line north of the rope boundary. Until we can enter into an agreement with the owner, please stay on our side of the rope line on the beach area.

Wednesday, June 9, 7:00 ~ BINGO! We ask everyone to bring a baked good for prizes.

PARKING: If you have not received your letter with parking sticker, call the Club office between 10-2!

We continue to have problems with non-members accessing our property. In order to discourage trespassers, we will be monitoring our parking lot very closely this summer. The following rules will be strictly enforced.

  1. Current member stickers must be permanently attached to the passenger side of the windshield by May 28. Members without stickers will not be allowed to park.
  2. If you have more drivers than parking stickers, a day pass can be obtained at no charge in the office. Make sure your driver knows your member number and has an ID to get a day pass. If the office is closed, place a sheet of paper with the driver’s name and member name & number on the passenger side of the dash.
  3. Guest passes can be purchased for $10 per day from the office. After 4:00pm, there is no charge for guest passes. If a guest needs to park and the office is closed, a piece of paper with the guest’s name and the member’s name & number must be placed on the dash on the passenger side. Remember, guests can only be on HSC property WITH a member in attendance. You may not invite guests to park in our lot and use our facility unless you are with them.
  4. Guest passes will not be sold for the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend or July 4th. After 4:00, guest passes will be provided.
  5. EVERY CAR IN THE LOT MUST HAVE A MEMBER STICKER, A GUEST PASS, OR A PAPER DENOTING WHOSE CAR IT IS AND THE MEMBER’S NAME/NUMBER. ALL OTHER VEHICLES WILL BE TOWED AT THE OWNER’S EXPENSE. THIS RULE IS IN EFFECT 24 HOURS A DAY, 365 DAYS PER YEAR.

LOCKERS:

If you have not done so, you must pay for your locker in person in the office, or by phone. Any lockers not paid will be open for other members to rent. There is currently a waiting list for chair and surfboard lockers.

BOAT STICKERS:

To launch, dock, or store boats at the Hanover Seaside Club, you must purchase an annual sticker and have it in place by Saturday, May 29. In order to receive a sticker/permit, the boat must be registered to a member. Please see the Boating Policy and the Boat Registration Form on the Quick Links page of the website. We continue to use the 2019 Boat Registration Form and fees have not been increased.

YOUTH TEES:

We have a large number of youth tees that have been acccumulating over the past several years. We have a variety of colors and designs in sizes S-L, with an XL or two. The tees originally sold for $15. Until Tuesday, we are selling the tees for $7 each – first come first served. I will post a few pictures on FaceBook so that you can see what’s available. If you don’t have social media, just stop by the office and they can help you.

The remainder of the menu will stay the same as last year – and prices will be unchanged. If food prices increase, we may have to address the cost of snack bar items during the season.

OPENING LETTERS: Opening letters have been mailed to those members who have no outstanding balance. If all dues and dining room minimum have not been paid, parking stickers will not be mailed. If you do not receive your letter and stickers in approximately a week, please call the Club office.

PARKING STICKERS: Don’t forget to put your parking sticker on your car immediately when it arrives. Beginning May 29, any car without a parking sticker or guest pass will be towed at owner’s expense.

OPEN HOUSE: Members are invited to an Open House at 605 S Lumina on Saturday, May 22 from 10-2. Come down and take a tour through our beautiful rental property. Volunteers have been working hard to get everything moved in and set-up. It has been a huge job and we appreciate all of members who have helped unpack boxes, wash dishes, load cabinets, decorate, etc.

MERCHANDISE: We continue to work on tee shirt orders. Shirts will not arrive before opening weekend, but we will have them for you in early June. We will have a supply of short and long sleeve tees, in a variety of colors, with our stunning design. Until then, we have a new item for you. Beginning May 22, we will be selling 22-ounce stadium cups with tops and straw. Cups are offered in red or blue with our logo and a beach quote. We are keeping prices low – $4 per cup – so that everyone can have their own HSC cup! You will be able to order a cup from the snack bar when you place your lunch order, from the downstairs snack bar, or the office. Quantities are limited, so get your cup quickly.

The regular summer meal schedule will begin with breakfast on Saturday, May 29. A full breakfast will be served Monday through Saturday. Dinner will be served Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Since the kitchen is used to prepare meals for the snack bar, no Sunday lunch will be served. Pricing remains the same as 2020. Dinner menus will be posted at least a week in advance to give members the opportunity to make reservations for their favorite meals.

SNACK BAR: How many of you have been anxiously waiting for a good old HSC Cheeseburger or Club Sandwich? Since Memorial Day is so late this year, we decided to open the Snack Bar for the weekend only a week early. Be sure to come to the beach on May 22 and 23 from 11-4 and order lunch! This year we are adding a Chef Salad to the menu for those of you who would like to have a lighter lunch.

On Tuesday through Friday, you can order snacks, drinks, and ice cream online or by calling the office and someone will bring it down to you.

If you have not used our online ordering system, you are really missing out! You can order from your beach chair, walk up and your food will be delivered on the first-floor porch. So fast and easy! WORKDAY: Thanks to all who turned out for our Workday last Saturday, May 1. We had a great response and were able to complete many of our projects – from laying mulch, to trimming bushes, hammering nails, removing rotted wood, etc. I do not have a list of volunteers, but you know who you are. We appreciate you!!!!

SEASON OPENING LETTER: The season opening letters containing parking stickers have not gone out yet. We are working to get them out as quickly as possible.

NEW TEE SHIRT DESIGN: We are extremely excited about our new tee shirt design. Special thanks to member Liz Sullivan of Insight Creative who designed the tee for us. You might remember that Liz’s husband, Scott, designed our duplex at 605 S. Lumina. What a talented and giving family! We are lucky to have them. Those members who are on Facebook had the opportunity to vote for colors. Tees will be printed on five colors for adults – blue, green, grey, white, and navy. This year’s shirts are an incredibly soft, comfy triblend fabric that we feel sure members will love. We hope to get the order in this week. Shirts, and other merchandise, will be available in the snack bar on weekends, and the office at other times. We will have a limited number of each size/color available, so be sure to get your shirt early. Since there isn’t generally much interest in youth and toddler sizers, we are only ordering one or two of each size in blue and white. We can place another order, if necessary.

COVID UPDATE: The Covid Taskforce met on Sunday, May 2, 2021 to update the HSC Policy following the Governor’s Executive Order which went into effect on Friday, April 30 at 5:00pm. The Taskforce unanimously agreed to the following:

Henceforth, unless future developments dictate, the HSC Covid Policy will be the guidelines set forth by the Governor’s current executive order regarding Face Coverings, Meeting Spaces and Reception Venues, Restaurants, and Mass Gathering, and other future Section of Executive Orders that may apply to the Hanover Seaside Club. This policy means that any restrictions currently in place that are more restrictive than those set forth by the Governor are repealed.

A few of the changes:

  1. No masks are required outside anywhere on Club property. This includes parking lots, walkways, porches, sound side, etc. We discourage members and their guests from congregating in areas (like the boardwalk to the beach) that can easily get crowded, forcing people to be in close proximity.
  2. There is no limit on the number of people who can sit together, at one table, in the dining room.
  3. Guest are allowed, and guest passes will be sold on weekdays and weekends – except on holidays and days listed in the Rules and Opening letter.
  4. Members staying on the 3rd floor may have guests. Guests must be checked in through the office and must wear masks inside the building.

The following rules remain in effect:

  1. Masks must be worn at all times inside the building except when sitting and actively eating/drinking.
  2. Only guests of those staying on the 3rd floor are allowing on the floor, including porches.
  3. Unvaccinated members and their guests should socially distance from others not in their household.

For those interested in reading the Governor’s Executive Order, it is linked HERE for you. Areas that are necessary for the HSC to follow are highlighted in yellow.

We have had several questions concerning limitation on numbers in our dining room and booking parties and events for the summer and fall. While the Governor’s Order states that indoor restaurants can be at 75% (which for us would be around 80 people) the Order also states that tables must be 6 feet apart. When putting our tables at the required distance, we can seat approximately 55-60 people, depending upon size of tables. Also, while mass gatherings have been increased to 100 inside, there are other provisions that we must follow. Our dining room, when used for private parties, falls under the same category as Meeting Spaces, Convention Centers, and Reception Venues. The rules for these spaces are as follows:

  1. Guests must Be Seated. To limit the degree to which Guests at the facility may come into contact with one another and spread COVID-19, a facility covered by this Subsection is closed unless it is or becomes a seated establishment for Guests. Guests must be in seats except to pay, enter, leave, use amenities, visit the restroom, and obtain food or drink.
  2. Capacity Restrictions. While this Executive Order is in effect, all open facilities covered by this Subsection must limit Guests in indoor and outdoor seating areas to Emergency Maximum Occupancy. Under this Executive Order, the Emergency Maximum Occupancy for a facility is the lowest number produced by applying the following tests: 1. Overall. The facility must limit Guests to fifty percent (50%) of the stated fire capacity for each indoor and outdoor space controlled by the facility. For rooms or spaces without a stated fire capacity, the limit on Guests is twelve (12) per one thousand (1000) square feet, rounded up.
  3. Social Distancing Required. The facility must limit the number of Guests in the space so that groups can stay six (6) feet apart.

This means, that if we book a party in our facility, the party would be limited to about 55 guests, the guests must wear masks except when eating/drinking, and guests must remain seated at their table nearly 100% of the time. Guests could not mingle/interact with others outside of their household. Since this would be impossible to enforce, the Covid Committee has determined that we will not book parties until current Orders, in effect until June 1, are changed.

The Governor has stated that he would like to further reduce restrictions for the summer, but the way for that to happen is for more adults to be vaccinated. His goal is that 66% of adults have at least one vaccine before opening our state further. Our Club is a family club, and the Covid Committee feels that it is our responsibility to protect all members and their guests. We encourage all adults to get the Covid-19 vaccine if they have not done so. Getting vaccinated protects you, your family, your Club friends, and will allow us to remove the restrictions so that we can enjoy a happy, healthy summer at our Club and Summer Home.

MOTHER’S DAY BUFFET: Mother’s Day is just a few days away. Garrett, our Food Services Manager, has planned an amazing menu to celebrate our Mothers. Call as quickly as possible to secure your reservation for either the 11:30 or 1:30 seating. You may eat in the dining room or have a meal to go. Right now, Sunday’s forecast is lots of sunshine and 80 degrees! Sounds like a perfect gift to our mothers!

OBITUARIES: We are sad to announce that two of our long-time Club members have passed away. Please keep their friends and families in your thoughts and prayers. We will miss these two women who were such an active part of our Club. If you click on their name, you can see their complete obituary.

605 S. LUMINA: The 605 S. Lumina Committee and Interior Design Committee are busy purchasing last minute items to make our rental property the best on Wrightsville Beach. We think you will be as pleased as we are when you tour the units during the Open House on May 22 between 10-2. We know that many of you have probably read more books and put together more puzzles in the last 12 months that you have in any year of your lives! If you have books and puzzles in excellent condition that you would like to donate, we will place a few in each of our rental units. We will accept either hardback or paperback books – but preferably not books that were in your beach bag when that rogue wave snuck up and drowned the contents. And please, no puzzles that are missing pieces. We don’t want puzzle rage from our renters!
