NEWS ~ AUGUST 15, 2021

COVID UPDATE: As you probably know, the number of cases of Covid-19 in NC is increasing rapidly due to the Delta variant. There have been no changes in Executive Orders that require us to alter the way we operate at this point, but they could come at any time. For now, it is business as usual; however, we urge all members (vaccinated and unvaccinated) to wear masks when inside at the Club. Also, to protect our staff and members, we ask that only one member/family enter the office at one time. We will keep members informed if orders require us to make a change.

DINING ROOM AND SNACK BAR UPDATE: From now until the end of the season, the dining room with serve a normal breakfast schedule. Dinners will be served on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. NOMINATIONS: The Nominating Committee is searching for Regular Members who would like to run for one of the officer positions (President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer) or for one of the 2 open Board positions. If you are interested in running for the Board, contact Brett Riggs, Chair, or Elise Beall or Jean Lawler. It is imperative that we fill the Board with people willing to work to improve our Club. The nomination form can be found on the Quick Links page of the website. Forms must be completed and e-mailed to Brett Riggs by September 1. The directions are on the form.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE: The Social Committee has done an outstanding job this year planning events for our members and their guests. Cher Pridgen served as Chair and had a committee of excellent workers who organized numerous successful parties that members and their guests enjoyed.

The final party of the summer was held last night. It was a beautiful evening on the beach. Members scattered from the ocean to the sound enjoying good music, great food, and the fellowship that the Hanover Seaside Club is known for. We look forward to future events.

Please be very patient with our staff. Because of decrease in number of staff members, our remaining staff is working very long hours and doing a variety of duties to keep the Club running. If you know of anyone looking for part-time employment, be sure to have them contact the Manager.

NOMINATIONS: The Nominating Committee is seeking Regular Members to run for the following positions:

President, Vice-President, and Secretary/Treasurer – 1-year terms

2 Board Members – 3-year terms

The Nominating Form is located on the Quick Links page of the website. The form is a Word document so that you can complete it on your computer, save it, and e-mail it to Nominating Chair – Brett Riggs. You must use this exact form to make a nomination. Members are welcome to self-nominate or nominate another interested Regular Member. If you nominate someone else, please make sure they are willing to serve. Nomination forms are due no later than September 1.

FULL MOON PARTY ON THE PORCH: August 14, 6:00-9:00 ~ Come to the beach and enjoy music by DJ Lee Pearson and food from Bill’s Food Truck. There will NOT be a cash bar for this event. BYOB and we will supply napkins, cups, and chasers. This is the last porch party of the season, so enjoy one last night with your Club friends. Please RSVP by Friday, August 13 at noon so we know how many to expect.

KAYAKS AND SAILBOATS: The season is quickly coming to an end and hurricane season is here. If you store your kayak or sailboat on the racks at the sound, be sure to tie them down when you are finished using them for the season or if you will be out of town during the fall when tropical storms and hurricanes are prevalent. We hope for a quiet fall, but you should be prepared!

COVID UPDATE: Most of you are probably aware that Covid is surging again in eastern North Carolina. Number of cases, percent positive, and hospitalization rates have all increased significantly in the past few weeks. For that reason, the Covid Committee has made the following recommendations:

Masks are recommended when inside the building for both vaccinated and unvaccinated members and their guests. With the Delta variant, vaccinated people can be infected and transmit the virus; however, the vaccine does protect those vaccinated from severe illness resulting in hospitalization and death. Please wear your masks to protect those who are unable to be vaccinated.

Only one member/family will be allowed in the office at the time. The space is small and does not allow for social distancing. Please be patient and remain in the hallway if there is someone ahead of you in the office.

The Hanover Seaside Club is following Governor’s Executive Orders, so if Governor Cooper makes changes, we will follow them. Please watch your e-mail, the blog, and FaceBook for updates.

NEWS ~ JULY 31, 2021

STAFFING: As we have noted several times this summer, we have been working with a reduced staff. This is a problem EVERYWHERE! I rarely pass a business that doesn’t have a sign up saying they need workers for all shifts. Our problem has now gone from bad to worse. Our college students are leaving to go back to school, and our high school students are either back in school (non-traditional calendar) or are busy with extracurricular activities that start before school. We are in dire straits because we only have a couple of servers left and they are only available for sporadic shifts. If you know anyone looking for a part-time position, please have them contact the office immediately. We are hiring servers, a front desk attendant, and possibly a parking lot attendant. We need our servers and front desk attendant through the fall, so hours will not end on Labor Day. Please spread the word! If we are not able to find servers, we will have to severely limit snack bar hours and lower the number of dinners served each week.

ROOM AVAILABILITY: We have rooms available to rent for full weeks or partial weeks in August. You must rent for a minimum of two nights. The following rooms are available:

August 7-10: Room 12

August 7-14: Rooms 1, 2, 7

August 14-21: Rooms 1,6,10,11

August 17-21: Rooms 2, 12

August 21-28: Rooms 5-12,15

August 28-September 6: Rooms 6,7,12

September 6-11: Rooms 1, 2, 5, 6, 10-12, 15

Call the front desk to make reservations for a quick vacation before school starts!

UPCOMING MENUS/SNACK BAR: For the week of July 31-August 7, we will be serving dinners only on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We do not have adequate staff to serve on Monday. The snack bar will be reducing weekend hours to 11-3 beginning August 7. We have had very little business after 3:00. Weekday hours will remain 11-2 for this week (excluding Monday). We are not sure about Snack Bar hours after August 9.

Tuesday, August 3 ~ Enchiladas or Bowls

Thursday, August 5 ~ Lasagna or Chicken Parmesan

Friday, August 6 ~ Fried Flounder or Fried Shrimp

SANDCASTLE CONTEST! Saturday, Aug 7, 12-2 Come get sandy and build a masterpiece! Individuals, families, and groups may sign up to participate. Judging will take place at 2:00. RSVP by Friday, August 6 at noon. All participants receive ice cream! Weather dependent. The forecast right now is 50% rain – but hopefully it will hold off until after the contest.

FULL MOON PARTY ON THE PORCH: Our last party, July 24, was very well attended and a great time was had by all. Everyone who has attended this year has been very enthusiastic about the social activities being offered. You can see a few pictures below.

The last Party on the Porch of the season will be held on Saturday, August 14 from 6-9. There will be a CASH BAR, TWO FOOD TRUCKS (First Bite and Bill’s Food Truck)! Click on the links to find out more about them. As always, children and guests are welcome! DJ Lee Pearson will be providing music. You don’t want to miss this event. Come experience what all of our members have been raving about! Please RSVP by Friday, July 23 at noon so we know how many to expect.

MERCHANDISE: We still have a supply of 22-ounce stadium cups with lids and straws in royal blue and purple. You can purchase them from the office or add one or two to your snack bar order! We also have a few khaki embroidered hats left, along with a few short and long sleeve tees. We will NOT be ordering more merchandise this year, so you better get what you want quickly! When they are gone, they are gone until next summer.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Believe it or not, it’s almost time for the annual meeting. In October we will be electing a President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer and 2 Board Members. The Nominating Committee for this year will be Brett Riggs, Chair, Elise Beall, and Jean Lawler. We will be posting updated nominating forms on the website by August 15. Please consider running for an office or the Board. We need committed Board Members who will guide us in the right direction during this time of rapid change.

STAIRWELL LIGHTS: Early in the season, the outside stairwell lights were out which made it dangerous to try to go up and down the stairs at night. The lights were replaced with LED lights which we agree are far too bright. We are working with our electrician to get them changed to something that will make it possible to see to get up and down the stairs, but not be blindingly bright. In the meantime, do NOT try to remove the lights, cut them off, or alter the timers. We will get this problem handled as quickly as possible.

This evening is going to be a real treat for young and not-so-young alike! Bring your kids and a some friends and enjoy this special night at the Club. Please call the Club office to let them know how many are coming by Thursday, July 22 at 5:00pm.

HSC MERCHANDISE: We replinished our stock of toddler and youth tees on Friday. We only ordered a few of each size, so if you’ve been waiting come and get them. We have toddler sizes 2T-5T in blue and youth sizes S-L in green and blue. We also added navy blue hats embroidered in white. There are still a few khaki hats embroidered in navy, also. The stadium cups in purple and royal blue are still available. We will not be ordering more cups this season, so get them while you can.

We have sold out of all adult short sleeved tees with the exception of a few athletic gray in various sizes. We do have a few long-sleeved tees in gray and navy.

A new shipment of short sleeved tees in blue, navy, white fleck (light gray), green, and coral are expected on July 21. Mark your calendars because our last shipment went FAST! We sold over 100 tees in one week alone. These tees are so soft and comfy, everyone loves them.

If there is enough interest, we will place another order for long sleeved tees. If you would like to purchase a long sleeved tee, call the Club office and tell them the size and color you prefer.

NEWS ~ JULY 2, 2021

4TH OF JULY!

Just a couple more sleeps until our traditional 4th of July Celebration! We are so excited that this year we can have all the activities that members have loved through the years. To see a full schedule of events, look back at the blog posted on June 12. A few reminders . . .

  1. Only blue stickers will be allowed in the parking lot until at least 4:00. No guest passes will be sold on July 4. Guests may park after 4:00. If the office is closed, have your guest put a paper with their name, as well as the member name and number on the dash.
  2. Since the 4th falls on Sunday this year, there will not be a buffet breakfast. If you would like to come early for a Continental breakfast, be sure to call for reservations by Saturday morning.
  3. The Opening Ceremony is starting a little later this year and activities are moved back to hopefully allow members to go to an early church service then come to the Club. Opening ceremonies will begin at 11:00.
  4. All members and guests must wear wristbands. If you have not picked up your member wristband, there will be a table set up on the first-floor porch on the Lumina Street side of the building. We will be giving out member and guest wristbands from that location – DO NOT GO TO THE OFFICE! We will set up at 9:00am and remain until most members have arrived. If you come later in the day and do not see the table, go to the office.
  5. If you ordered the pulled pork lunch, call the Club office at 910-256-2726 when you are ready for your plate to be delivered. Just tell them where you are, and they will bring your take-out plates to you. You may eat in the dining room, snack bar area, or on any of the first or second floor porches.
  6. If you would like to compete in the Cornhole Tournament or the Ken Johnson Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, signup sheets will be available on the first floor, ocean side porch.
  7. We expect that our facility will be quite crowded on July 4. Please remember that unvaccinated members and their guests are encouraged to wear masks inside the building.
  8. Please pick up after yourself! We are working with reduced staff, so we need members to help keep our building and grounds neat and clean.
  9. Please do not park in the gravel lot if you will be coming later and/or leaving early. We are reserving those spaces for members who will be coming early and staying all day so that the gate will not have to be opened and closed over and over during the day. As in past years, we expect that we may have to double park cars in the main lot during the most crowded part of the day. Just leave your keys in the car and the parking lot attendants will move cars as needed.

Thanks to our Social Committee, chaired by Cher Pridgen, for organizing our celebration. It truly does take a village to offer all the games and activities for July 4th! We always need volunteers to help with social activities. Contact Cher if you can volunteer for one or more events this year.

SNACK BAR SCHEDULE: The Snack Bar will operate normal hours on Saturday and Sunday (11:00-4:00). Normally, the Snack Bar is closed on Mondays, but since Monday is a holiday for many, the Snack Bar will be open from 11-2. It will be closed on Tuesday for this week only.

DINNER MENUS: Remember, our dining room is operating at near normal capacity for the summer. Come to the Club to enjoy the beautiful view and delicious meals served by our Food Services Manager, Garrett, and his staff.

7/5, Monday: Fried Chicken or BBQ Shrimp

7/6, Tuesday: Taco Bowls or Tacos

7/8, Thursday: Chicken Parmesan or Baked Ziti (change from previously posted)

7/9, Friday: Fried Flounder and Fried Shrimp

7/12, Monday: Fried Chicken or Chipotle Citrus Shrimp Skewers

7/13, Tuesday: Taco Bowls or Enchiladas

BINGO, BINGO, BINGO! Come early to make sure you get a seat to play Bingo on Wednesday, July 8 at 7:00pm. Please bring a prize for Bingo. Home baked treats are always a crowd favorite, but anything will be appreciated. Steve Lee will be hosting this week!

HSC MERCHANDISE: We have plenty of royal blue and purple HSC stadium cups with lids and straws ready for you. You can purchase them at the downstairs snack bar on weekends, from the office, or add them to your online snack bar order. We also have a few tees and hats left that you can purchase in the office. More merchandise will be arriving in a couple of weeks!

There will not be a newsletter/blog next week. I will be on vacation! Check out FaceBook for any breaking news.

EVENTS: Thanks to our Social Committee, our June events have been extremely successful!  On June 19, we had a crowd at our first Family Fun Night. A hot dog supper was served along with a cash bar and lots of fun and games for the kids. The kids absolutely LOVED the dragon obstacle course. We feel sure he will make another appearance. Thanks to our volunteers Cher and Mike Pridgen, Suzanne and Freddy Harrell, Susan Milholland, Jean and Eddie Lawler, Lisa Price, Peggy Russell, Joe Browning, Tanner Konrady, Maria Stasios, Debbie Whitman, and Jan Sheppard.

Our Full Moon(ish) Margarita Night was a huge success. We had the largest crowd I have seen at the Club (other than 4th of July) in many years. Not sure what was more popular, the cash bar or Pepe’s Taco Truck, but there were lines for both most of the night. The kids had a great time playing cornhole and running in the sand! Our volunteers included Mike and Cher Pridgen, Suzanne and Freddie Harrell, Debbie and Clark Whitman, Helen and Lee (music man) Pearson, Maria and Jim Stasios, Lois Steel, Jan Sheppard and Elise and Megan Beall.
We have had rave reviews of our events this summer. It takes a lot of helping hands to make even the simplest event successful. If you are willing to help, please contact Cher Pridgen, Social Committee Chair. We have several events coming up and we can use more volunteers.
HSC FACEBOOK GROUP: If you are on FaceBook, be sure to join the private Hanover Seaside Page. If you are not a social media user, it would be worth your time to join FB just to follow our page. It’s the fastest, easiest, and least expensive way to get the news to our members. We have voted on several things this summer – the colors for tees and cups, and plans for the snack bar. I have had several people request to join the page recently who do not show on our roster. For many of our accounts, spouses and dependent childrens’ names do not show. I cannot approve an account if they do not show on the roster, so please call the Club office to update your member information. Same is true if names change due to marriage.
MERCHANDISE:  This is what our merchandise cabinet looked like one week ago!. We are absolutely shocked at how many tees we sold in 5 days. As of now, there is one 1 toddler and 1 youth tee left. In Adult Small though XXL there are only a couple in each size – and mostly athletic gray. We have a few more XXXL. As of Saturday night, there was one green and one light blue shirt left, and perhaps a couple of navy and white fleck. Don’t despair! We are placing another order for tees today. In approximately 3 weeks, we will be able to restock all of the colors you see here and add a coral color for those who wanted something different.
We have several long-sleeved tees in navy and athletic gray. We will not reorder long sleeved until later in the summer.
We still have about 8 hats and plenty of purple and royal blue stadium cups. Stop by the office to pick up your hats and cups before they run out, too!
